Former All Black, Television Host

PIRI WEEPU

Ngāi Tahu, Whakatōhea, Te Atiawa.

Piri Weepu is a revered former All Black, earning 71 test caps during his illustrious rugby career. He became a national hero during the 2011 Rugby World Cup when he stepped into a pivotal role as the team's kicker during the Quarter Final. Piri’s seven successful penalties in that match earned him the title of Man of the Match and played a crucial role in guiding New Zealand to victory.

Piri’s connection to the cultural essence of New Zealand rugby is also significant, having been an integral leader of the haka. Of his 71 tests, he led the haka in 51, becoming a symbol of strength and tradition on the international stage.

Following his retirement from New Zealand Test rugby, Piri played abroad in England and France before returning home to New Zealand. He then transitioned into television, creating the successful series ‘Piri's Tiki Tour’ on Māori Television. The show, which showcases Piri’s passion for hunting and gathering with local characters across Aotearoa, reached its fourth season in 2021 and won Best Lifestyle Programme at the 2019 TV Awards.

In 2020, Piri joined the cast of Match Fit, a popular TV series where former international rugby players work to get back in shape while sharing the challenges they faced during and after their rugby careers.

Beyond television, Piri remains deeply connected to rugby, mentoring at Wellington College coaching their First XV team, giving back to the sport that shaped his life.
